WHAT IS THE MIDDLE COLLEGE?
  • A COLLEGE ENTRY program which includes GED PREPARATION and college level PREPARATION FOR EMPLOYMENT coursework to help students pursue their goal of A COLLEGE EDUCATION
  • A program for individuals, BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 – 24, who HAVE NOT COMPLETED THEIR HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION but HAVE THE GOAL OF ATTENDING COLLEGE
  • There is NO COST to the student to participate in this program

WHERE IS THE MIDDLE COLLEGE LOCATED?

  • Room 626 at the DOWNTOWN CAMPUS of J. SARGEANT REYNOLDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE
  • The downtown campus is located at 700 East Jackson Street, between 7th Street and 8th Street, two blocks east of the Richmond Coliseum

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE MIDDLE COLLEGE?
  • Individuals BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 – 24 who have not completed high school and are not currently enrolled in high school
  • Individuals who demonstrate a 9th GRADE LEVEL based on READING AND MATH testing results
  • Individuals who are ready to COMMIT TO THEIR FUTURE through participation in a structured ACADEMIC and PRE - VOCATIONAL program

WHEN WILL THE NEXT MIDDLE COLLEGE PROGRAM BEGIN?
  • Applications are now being accepted. Download the current application or contact the Middle College at 804 523-5345 to request an application.
  • The SPRING and FALL programs are each limited to 40 students; those applicants who do not qualify for the Middle College program will be referred to a community-based GED program.

HOW OFTEN DO CLASSES MEET?

  • Classes meet FOUR DAYS A WEEK, Monday – Thursday
  • DAY and EVENING classes are offered during the SPRING and FALL semesters
  • Additional time may be required outside of the scheduled class time for tutoring, program activities, and Middle College special events. Attendance is mandatory for all scheduled classes and events.

WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF THE MIDDLE COLLEGE PROGRAM?

  • The Middle College program is a ONE SEMESTER program
  • The semester is approximately 13 weeks long
  • While preparing for the GED, students will also receive assistance with enrolling in college, applying for financial aid and scholarship opportunities, identifying an academic/vocational plan, and registering for classes.
  • One year of follow-up services will be provided for all program participants

WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS?

  • Submit an application
  • Schedule TABE REVIEW and TABE TEST dates by calling 523 - 5345

(APPLICANTS are responsible for scheduling review and testing dates)

  • Practice your skills independently (optional, but recommended)
    • Reviewing the rules and processes for the following areas BEFORE coming in to test: multiplication tables, long division, percents, fractions, decimals, ratios & proportions, positive/negative numbers (integers)
    • Practice your math skills at www.thatquiz.org. We have created some quizzes to help you review your math skills.  At the main page, enter any of the following codes in the upper left hand corner and choose any “student” from the drop down box:  DPLE9874, BPAZ4459, GSDE2750, YVOZ1999, XLKK2134.

    • Read as much as possible.  Search for articles and books that interest you.
  • Attendance at a REVIEW SESSION is REQUIRED before taking the TABE tests

Testing sessions will include:

  • A Middle College program overview
  • Completion of the Reading and Math portions of the TABE (Tests of Adult Basic Education) tests
  • Completion of a writing sample in the form of a short essay

All applicants who have completed testing will be contacted.

  • Applicants who have met the minimum 9th grade requirement will be contacted for an interview to review their results and further discuss their qualifications for the program. Students will also be tested on their multiplication tables during this interview.
  • Acceptance into the program will be based on test results, applicant follow-through, and the interview.
  • Applicants who have not met the 9th grade minimum requirement will be provided referral paperwork and contact information about local community adult education programs.
