Reynolds’ Dental Laboratory Program Receives Grant
RICHMOND, VA (Feb. 05, 2007) – J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College’s Dental Laboratory Technology Program was recently awarded a $30,000 Chancellor’s E-learning Enhancement & Development (CEED) grant by the Virginia Community College System to increase the accessibility of the program through distance learning and various multi-media delivery technologies.
“The CEED grant will provide the opportunity for students in commercial dental laboratories throughout the state of Virginia to have on-line access to dental lab technology education courses that will enhance their skills and advance their careers in dental laboratory technology,” said Ernie Wolfe, Dental Laboratory Technology program head. “It will respond to a workforce need for more dental laboratory technicians. This combination will allow each student weekly scheduling flexibility for most of the course, with a minimum number of required attendance periods.”
JSRCC’s Dental Laboratory Technology Program qualified for the CEED grant by meeting specific criteria such as program growth potential, industry need for formally trained Dental Lab Technicians and support from professional dental organizations and the Dental Laboratory Advisory committee.
Reynolds’ Dental Laboratory Technology Program has been in existence since 1974, and offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree and an online Career Studies Certificate. Last fall, the program added Irvin Baughan to its full time faculty. Baughan most recently served as the supervisor of the Service Dental Laboratory at the University of Nevada.
Serving over 17,000 students annually, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College is the youngest and third largest of 23 community colleges in Virginia. The College operates three campuses serving residents in the City of Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Hanover, Goochland, Powhatan and Louisa.
