JSRCC TRANSPORTAION OPEN HOUSE RICHMOND, Va (November 3, 2005) - JSRCC Western Campus held its inaugural Transportation Open House on Tuesday, November 1. The event was open to the public and allowed the College to provide information about the vast opportunities for employment that exist in the transportation industry. “The idea for the Transportation Open House came from the JSRCC Transportation Focus Group, which is a working group of industry partners from the Greater Richmond Area,” said JSRCC Dean, School of Engineering and Manufacturing Technology Dr. Robert Heinz. “Together are working to create our vision for transportation programs for the year 2020.” Over 220 students attended the Open House, enjoying the opportunity to meet more than 20 vendors, including event financial sponsor Kenworth Truck Company and Truck Enterprises, Inc. Additional vendors included: Afton Chemical, Auto Paint Supply Co. Inc., BG Products, Carquest, Carter Equipment, Down and Under Limousine, Firestone, Hunter Engineering, James River Equipment, Matco Tools SK Tools, Snap-On Tools, State Farm Insurance, Vetronix, Virginia Farm Bureau and Virginia Truck Center. “People who are not familiar with the transportation industry tend to still think of it as a field of mechanics and automotive repair people. In fact, the industry is a highly technological industry that employees people in a wide variety of positions from technicians to finance and insurance representatives,” notes JSRCC School of Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Interim Assistant Dean Tracy S. Green. Representatives from James Madison University's Integrated Science and Technology degree program were also present to discuss their biodiesel refinery, while providing displays of its student-built alternative fuels vehicles, including a hybrid car. "The transportation industry is a viable, lucrative, and cutting edge area for employment, and we do the industry a great service to educate the community at large of the vast opportunities that exist in the field," exclaimed Allen Phibbs, JSRCC Transportation Focus Group Community and Alumni Outreach subcommittee Chair. “We are thrilled with the success of the fair and anticipate offering a similar event next year.” Serving over 17,000 students annually, JSRCC is the youngest and third largest of 23 community colleges in Virginia. The College consists of three campuses to serve residents in the City of Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Hanover, Goochland, Powhatan and Louisa.
