New JSRCC Scholarship Opportunity For In-Coming Students January 11, 2006 RICHMOND, VA - J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) are now recruiting first-year community college students for their initial Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship Program. Three JSRCC students (one from each campus) will be given up to $3,000 for a full year of tuition, books and fees. This unique opportunity will be available at JSRCC and each of the other 22 community colleges – one scholarship at each of the VCCS 40 campuses – for students starting in the fall of 2006. The naming of the first 40 Legacy Scholars will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Virginia Community College System’s creation in 1966. >> Read the full story
JSRCC President Supports College Transfer Grant Bill January 25, 2006 RICHMOND, VA - J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College President Dr. Gary Rhodes announced his support of the newly created Community College Transfer Grant Program bill that is currently in the Virginia General Assembly. The new bill creates a Community College Transfer Grant Program, which will provide higher education grants or vouchers to residents of Virginia who have successfully completed an associate's degree and have been admitted to an accredited nonprofit public or private institution of higher education. >> Read the full story February 2006 National Recognition for Outstanding Richmond Student February 6, 2006 RICHMOND, VA - J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College congratulates Crystal Pace for being Phi Theta Kappa’s 2005 ALL-USA Academic team nominee. Pace is a Richmond native and 2000 J. R. Tucker High School graduate. She now serves as a member and officer of the Alpha Gamma Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, which is the largest honor society in the world. “Guns, Germs, and Steel” Book Discussion on Why Some Races Succeed February 13, 2006 RICHMOND, VA - A free community event will be held to discuss Jared Diamond’s Pulitzer Prize winning book “Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fate of Human Societies” on Thursday, March 2. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Representatives from Bon Secours, Walgreen’s Pharmacy, and J. Sargeant Reynolds will share some of the latest career opportunities in the health care industry. Two Local Groups Sponsor Free Program for Autism Awareness Month April 6, 2006 RICHMOND, VA - Autism organizations nationwide have joined together to designate the month of April as Autism Awareness Month. Reynolds to Host Job Fair April 13, 2006 RICHMOND, VA - J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (JSRCC), in conjunction with Style Weekly, will co-host a job fair on April 26 from 10 to 5 p.m. on the Parham Road Campus located at 1651 E. Parham Road in Burnette Hall. The event is free and open to the general public. Over 20 local and national companies will be present during the event, including Ukrops, Circuit City, Richmond Financial Group, SunTrust, Capital One, UPS, and The Restaurant Co. NEW TRANSFER OPTION FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS (Possible Scholarships Sweeten Deal) April 13, 2006 RICHMOND, VA - Virginia Commonwealth University President Eugene Trani and Virginia Community College System Chancellor Glenn DuBois have approved an agreement that guarantees admission to VCU for community college graduates. Those who qualify will have completed a transfer-oriented associate’s degree program with at least a 2.5 cumulative grade-point-average (GPA). In addition, Dr. Trani announced that VCU will offer 10 competitive need-based scholarships for VCCS students with at least a 2.75 GPA. Sargeant Reynolds Community College will hold its 33rd Annual Commencement ceremony on Saturday May 13 at 2 p.m. at the VCU Siegel Center/ Alltel Pavilion. No Press Releases June 2006 The College of William and Mary to Guarantee Admission To Virginia Community College Graduates June 5, 2006 RICHMOND, VA - The College of William and Mary is the latest state college or university to guarantee admission to qualified graduates from Virginia's 23 community colleges, including J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. William and Mary will guarantee admission to Virginia community college graduates with a grade-point-average of not less than 3.6 who complete a transfer-oriented associate’s degree. “Graduates of the Commonwealth’s community colleges have made many contributions to William and Mary over the years, and we look forward to welcoming more of them to the campus. Governor Kaine Urges Virginia Students To Apply For New Federal Education Grants Students must apply at July 5, 2006 RICHMOND, VA - Governor Timothy M. Kaine today urged qualified, Pell Grant-eligible Virginia students to apply for new federal grants worth between $750 and $4,000. The new Academic Competitiveness (AC) grants and National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) grants provide further incentive for students to take more challenging courses in high school, and to pursue college majors in high demand areas such as science, math, technology, engineering and critical foreign languages. >> Read the full story

Reynolds Foundation donates $1M to remove financial barriers for JSRCC students September 14, 2006 RICHMOND, VA - As students headed back to campus at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College this fall the college celebrated a historic event by receiving one of its largest gifts ever donated by a private family foundation. The JSRCC Educational Foundation announced today that a $1 million gift from the Richard S.
