Printing from
College Computers
Effective June 13, 2011

The college has a low-cost pay-to-print system used from all computers in the campus libraries and academic computing centers. The libraries provide access to multifunction copiers/printers from each computer. These can also be used for color or black-and-white copying. The academic computing centers have only black-and-white laser printers.  [See step-by-step instructions for using the system]

Overview

  • You should bring at least two $1 bills or one $5 bill to the campus library or academic computing center to purchase a print card (cost $1) and to add value to the print card using the Equitrac Pay Station.
  • You can use your print card to make black-and-white, color, and two-sided copies and prints from the copier/printers in each JSRCC campus library.
  • You can use your print card to make black-and-white prints from any computer in each JSRCC campus academic computing center (ACC).

 Getting Started

  • Purchase a print card from the Equitrac Pay Station vending machine located inside the library or the academic computing center. The card itself costs $1. This fee gives you the reusable card only.
  • If you purchase your card with a $5 bill, the pay station will dispense the card and then you have 60 seconds to put the card back in to load the remaining $4 of value onto your card. The pay stations cannot dispense change. The pay station will begin beeping to remind you to put the card back in to load the remaining value.
  • Add printing value to your card in increments of $1 or $5 using the Equitrac Pay Stations. The machines will not accept coins or bills larger than $5, and no change will be given.
  • The maximum value that a card can hold at any given time is $10.
  • Keep your card! You paid $1 for it. You can continue to reload it with printing value. You can use the card for printing at any JSRCC library or academic computing center.  Write your name on your card with a marker.  There is no personally identifying information stored on the card.
  • You can check your card's current value at any card reader or any Equitrac Pay Station.
  • Check the value on your card before you start printing or copying large jobs. Log on to the printer release station to see the total cost of your printing job before you attempt to release it and make sure you have enough value on the card to cover the printing job's cost.

Printing FAQs

 What’s the Release Key?

  • Whatever you want it to be! The Release Key is your password used to print your jobs. It must be at least 4 characters long and no longer than 14 characters.

  • Try using your phone number, college EmplID or MyJSRCC username.

  • If you use the same Release Key for multiple print jobs, you can print them all at one time.

Why do I have to pay for printing?

  • Recoup some of the cost of printers, toners, maintenance and paper. Reduce waste; encourage students to print only what they need.
  • Fairness. Students who print pay for it, rather than charging all students whether they print or not.

I don’t want to pay to print - what are my alternatives?

  • Save your work to a flash drive.

  • Email your work to yourself.

  • Write it down! Sometimes a few notes are all you need.

Why doesn’t the student “technology fee” pay for my printing

  • The “technology fee” included in the per-credit hour tuition and fee rate covers the purchase and maintenance of the computer hardware and software but does not cover the cost of materials, such as paper and toner.

How can I save money while using the printers?

  • Print carefully. Use Print Preview to check how many pages are in the documents or web sites before printing them.

  • Print multiple. PowerPoint slides can be printed with multiple slides per page. Staff members are happy to show you how.

  • Print only what you need. Ask yourself “Do I really need this? Can I use this in another form…or can I print just part of it?”

Do I have to pay for copies I don’t want or don’t like?

  • The college cannot give refunds for unintended copies or prints.

  • Print carefully.

I do not have any $1 or $5 bills but only $20 or $50 bills. How can I print?

  • Be prepared! The vending machine only accepts $1 and $5 bills.

  • Students may get change from the Business Office during regular business hours. Library and academic computing center staff cannot make change.

  • No credit or debit cards.

I can’t find my print job, and I sent it twice!

  • Resend the job with a shorter password.

  • Make sure you authorize the cost by clicking “accept” after inputting your release key. Not doing this can stall the printer.

  • Ask a staff member! We are happy to help.

      Miscellaneous Tips

  • Printing jobs that have been submitted but not released are held in the system for no more than 4 hours.  Once released or deleted, printing jobs cannot be retrieved.

  • Don't store your print card next to your cell phone or other electronic devices that might erase the magnetic strip on your print card where the value is stored.

  • To save paper, please consider double-sided printing and copying in the libraries.  You can choose the duplex option in Print Properties before submitting your print job. Costs are priced per side, not per page, so duplex printing does not reduce your cost.

Confused? Library and academic computing center staff will be happy to walk you through the printing process.
