students with College President Dr. Gary Rhodes, 10/31/2008 -Legacy Scholars
Announced Pair of Reynolds students honored as Commonwealth Legacy Scholars [back to top] Laura Briere (Mechanicsville) and Ashlyn Landrum (Aylett) were recently named as two of 30 Virginia community college students to be honored as a Commonwealth Legacy Scholar recipient during a luncheon ceremony at the Omni Hotel in Richmond. The scholarships recognize students from across the commonwealth who have demonstrated academic excellence during high school as well as a commitment to developing their leadership skills. They will become mentors to future Legacy Scholars as they move through their academic programs and graduate from a Virginia Community College. Each scholarship bears the name of one of many philanthropy leaders who support Virginia’s Community Colleges. Students share life-changing stories at 11th Annual Scholarship Luncheon [back to top] “I want you to know that every bit of help counts,” said Ron

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College today announced a $15 million major gifts campaign [back to top] Reynolds Receives Endowed Gift from the Robins Foundation [back to top] First Urban Teachers Institute Funded by The Community Foundation of Greater Richmond [back to top] Reynolds celebrates Week of the Nurse May 6-12 with gift to address nursing faculty shortage [back to top] The nursing shortage is a comprehensive issue which includes the challenge in colleges operating costly nursing programs for students, and recruiting top nursing faculty to teach future nurses. The General Assembly has taken action to increase nursing faculty salaries at public institutions in Virginia by 10%. But this is not enough. Community colleges must get creative in addressing the nursing shortage issue through public and private partnerships to ensure quality healthcare providers are being trained and available for future care. Georgiadis Hall dedicated on Parham Road Campus [back to top] After teaching for free for over 13 years, Dimitri Georgiadis recently pledged more than $1 million to the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Educational Foundation to fund scholarships for at-risk youth in the Richmond area. After leading several international companies, including Shering-Plough Corporation and Productos Del Monte, a former subsidiary of R.J. Reynolds Industries based in Mexico City, Georgiadis settled in Richmond, Virginia in 1994. His passion for photography soon lead him to take a class at Reynolds. He never left. In addition to donating equipment to the program and establishing the Maggie & Dimitri Georgiadis Scholarship, he has shared his knowledge of photography with students as a pro-bono faculty member and as program head for more than 13 years. Born in Greece, Georgiadis came to America in 1947 in search of the American dream. He soon discovered that for him the dream would begin with a college education. He attended New York University where he earned a B.S. in International Trade in 1951—the same year he became a U.S. citizen. From there, he studied at the graduate level at the University of Illinois while serving in the U.S. Air Force before beginning his career in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. Dimitri and Maggie Georgiadis named 2007 Medallion Society Award recipients [back to top] The J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Educational Foundation named Dimitri and Maggie Georgiadis the 2007 Medallion Society Award recipients at the President’s Reception hosted Monday evening, April 2, 2007, by Dr. Gary Rhodes. The Medallion Award is the highest honor that the Foundation can bestow upon an individual, corporation, or foundation for their support of the college. Reynolds Foundation donates $1M to remove financial barriers for J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College students [back to top] As students headed back to campus at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College this fall the college celebrated a historic event by receiving one of its largest gifts ever donated by a private family foundation. The JSRCC Educational Foundation announced recently that a $1 million gift from the Richard S. Reynolds Foundation has been made to increase much needed scholarship funds for future generations of Reynolds students.Known as the “Reynolds Family Scholarships in Memory of J. Sargeant Reynolds,” the family makes this generous gift in celebration of the qualities embodied in the late J. Sargeant Reynolds, for whom the college is named. By commemorating his outstanding character and unwavering integrity through a gift that fosters this potential in today’s young people the family foundation establishes a permanent scholarship fund. Increasing tuition remains a financial barrier for students pursuing a college education and currently more than $238,000 in scholarship awards are made annually to applicants. Nearly 900 qualified students are not assisted, however, due to limited funds. For more information about how you can be involved in the Scholarship Program contact 523-5181.
