ASSOCIATE DEAN OF ADVISING SERVICES (POSITION NO. FA405)

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College is the third largest community college in Virginia and offers a variety of academic programs and services to the residents of the City of Richmond and five nearby counties. Annually, our three campuses serve approximately 14,000 credit students and provide training for 6,500 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The Associate Dean of Advising Services is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and forward-thinking higher education professional to join an award-winning college in a highly collaborative environment that encourages creativity and innovation, and is committed to student success and equitable outcomes for all.

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT:  Full-time twelve-month professional faculty-ranked appointment. Salary range:  $62,270 - $126,288. Approximate maximum hiring salary:  $67,000. Salary commensurate with the education and experience of the applicant. 


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Master’s degree in counseling or a related field required. 

Considerable and comprehensive knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques in counseling or a related field.  Considerable knowledge of college-level academic advising, student retention strategies, and barriers to graduation. Knowledge of career and transfer programs, and accommodative services for students.  Knowledge of student development/college orientation programs. Demonstrated ability to lead and direct advising services programs and services, utilizing effective organization and prioritization skills. Demonstrated ability to interact with internal and external constituencies employing effective skills in communication and presentation in order to integrate and align student advising needs with college services.   Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic planning initiatives; and conduct evaluations and assessments of advising services programs.  Demonstrated skill in supervising and directing the work of professional and paraprofessional staff.  Demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff, and students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.  Demonstrated ability to use a personal computer and current software programs.  Effective verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills required.  The selected candidate will be required to complete the Commonwealth’s Statement of Economic Interest, and must successfully pass the college’s pre-employment security screening.


QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:  Doctorate or advanced graduate studies in community college leadership preferred. Current and progressive experience in college-level advising, career and personal counseling in a comprehensive community college in an urban, multi-cultural setting is preferred. Experience with Title III Grant administration is also preferred.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Associate Dean of Advising Services will provide dynamic leadership to the areas of Academic Advisement, Counseling, Student Accommodations, Transfer and Career Services, and the Great Expectations program. The Associate Dean will be well-versed in programs and initiatives that help significantly improve outcomes for all students and will be a key leader in Reynolds Community College’s full implementation of Guided Pathways.  The Associate Dean of Advising Services will integrate diverse resources and technologies, collaborate with college constituents, and will foster an organizational climate that promotes diversity, encourages innovation, and provides effective leadership to staff and students
