Upon successful completion of our program, you'll meet the accounting educational requirements to sit for the Virginia CPA exam.

Students must obtain the following from one or more accredited institutions:

  • At least 120 semester hours of college courses
  • Baccalaureate or higher degree
  • 24 semester hours of business courses
  • Accounting concentration or equivalent or 24 semester hours of accounting courses

ACC 215 - Computerized Accounting

Discover how computers transform accounting practices through hands-on applications that give you an immediate edge in today's business world.

ACC 261 - Principles of Federal Taxation I

Examine the study of federal taxation as it relates to individuals and related entities. Includes tax planning, compliance, and reporting.

ACC 241 - Auditing I

Explore the techniques of investigating, interpreting, and appraising accounting records and assertions.

Additional Program Information

PURPOSE: This program provides students with the accounting coursework required by the Virginia Board of Accountancy to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination.

OCCUPATIONAL OBJECTIVES: These accounting courses may fulfill accounting requirements for various positions in government and the private sector.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Select appropriate methods and apply judgment to evaluate accounting information and make informed and logical business decisions.
  • To be eligible to take the CPA exam in Virginia, students must complete 24 semester hours of accounting coursework, including courses in accounting information systems, auditing, financial accounting and taxation (referred to as Core Accounting Courses).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: General college curricular admission.

PROGRAM NOTES: Students entering this program must have successfully completed Principles of Accounting I and II (ACC 211–212). Because the CPA exam is computer-based, students should be proficient in using computers, including Windows, Microsoft Word, and Excel. Students are encouraged to consult with their Accounting faculty advisor prior to enrolling in courses.

CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITIES: To meet the educational requirements to sit for the Virginia CPA exam, candidates must obtain the following from one or more accredited institutions: 

  • At least 120 semester hours of college coursework
  • A baccalaureate or higher degree
  • An accounting concentration or its equivalent

Virginia Board of Accountancy (VBOA) requires the following:

  • A minimum of 24 semester hours in accounting coursework, including courses in auditing, financial accounting, accounting information systems, and taxation
  • A minimum of 24 semester hours in business coursework (up to six hours of accounting courses beyond the 24 required for accounting may count toward this requirement)

Students may complete the 24 business credit hours required by the VBOA at Reynolds. Please consult your faculty advisor for recommended course selections.
