Programs in American Sign Language and Interpreter Education (ASL & IE) will prepare you to communicate with people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Once you have developed fluency in ASL, Interpreter Education leads to specialized workforce credentials that are required to work as an ASL-English (sign language) interpreter. Interpreters work in virtually any setting, but most full-time employment is found in K-12 education, colleges and universities, and community and government settings. A bachelor’s degree is required to sit for the National Interpreting Certification (NIC) exam.

Early Childhood programs will develop your skills and knowledge related to the care, supervision, education, and development of children birth through age 12. With the certificate or degree, you will be able to work with children in a child care or preschool setting. A bachelor’s or master’s degree is required to get a teaching license to work in elementary schools, Virginia Pre-School Initiative (VPI), and some Head Start settings. Reynolds offers two-year associate degrees in three Teacher Preparation specializations, and has transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities for this program.

The two-year associate degree in Human Services prepares you for entry-level positions in the public, private, and non-profit human services delivery system. A bachelor’s or master’s degree may be required for professional counseling and social work positions. Professional credentials are available through external credentialing bodies. The career studies certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling Education prepares you for employment in substance abuse counseling and addictions treatment. Courses in this program can be used to meet the certification requirements of substance abuse counselors and assistants, as designated by the Health Professions Board of Counseling in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
