From Challenge to Commencement: Sebastian Portillo Delivers Inspiring Message to the Reynolds Class of 2025

Sebastian Portillo, student graduation speaker, Spring 2025, at podiumIn a year marked by triumphs and relentless determination, Sebastian Portillo delivered an inspiring message at the 2025 Reynolds Commencement—a fitting recognition for a student whose journey has been anything but ordinary.

Sebastian’s story is one of quiet strength and undeniable impact. Now a graduate of Reynolds, he recently served as the Vice-President of Engagement for the Student Governing Association (SGA), President of Active Minds, a student-led club focused on mental health awareness, and he works part-time as a Student Engagement Specialist in Reynolds’ Student Engagement department. On top of his academic and campus leadership roles, Sebastian has also worked in food service to support himself while attending college full time.

But behind his warm, approachable demeanor and extensive list of achievements lies a powerful personal story—one shaped by early responsibility, deep personal loss, and an unwavering commitment to growth.

A Personal Mission Rooted in Mental Health

Raised in Norfolk, he grew up with a mother who was a firefighter and EMT before a workplace injury forced her into early retirement. Her subsequent struggle with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type, and agnosia, as well as substance abuse, brought turmoil and uncertainty to their home. As her condition worsened, Sebastian became her primary caregiver, even as he tried to navigate school and adolescence.

“It was hard to watch the deterioration of my mom’s mind,” Sebastian shares. “She was our rock growing up, and then things just changed.”

After an eventual eviction and estrangement, Sebastian found himself without a clear path forward. He left Tidewater Community College and moved to Richmond for a fresh start, following his partner who was attending Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). That’s when he discovered Reynolds.

“My goal was to find somewhere where I could get comfortable and regain focus on my academics. Reynolds has been a wild success—I couldn’t be more pleased,” Sebastian says.

Becoming a Leader and a Voice for Others

Reynolds provided more than just a second chance—it became a launchpad. Immersing himself in campus life, Sebastian rose to leadership roles, especially through Active Minds, where he proudly served as President.
“Active Minds has been the most rewarding part of my time here,” he says. “Mental health is something I’m deeply passionate about because of what I’ve lived through.”

Under his leadership, the club hosted events like the “Self-Love Workshop,” in collaboration with the Black Student Union, creating safe and engaging spaces for students to talk about self-worth, wellness, and healing.

Dr. Ben Cowman, Director of Student Engagement & Leadership, praises Sebastian’s character: “Sebastian has a natural ability to bring people together and show care and concern for his peers. I've seen firsthand how he is driven to serve and help others around him.”

Academic Growth and Meaningful Mentorship

Sebastian credits Reynolds for not only reigniting his academic drive but also for nurturing him through personal hardships. He speaks with great appreciation about instructors like Professor Shavon Jack and Dr. Kellie Aldi, whose compassion and support made a lasting impact.

“I’ve had excellent instructors, and the advising center helped me map out my courses in a logical way. I learned that asking for help is not a weakness—it’s a strength.”

Balancing his commitments through careful planning and a focus on self-care, Sebastian has built a strong academic foundation. His love for technology and problem-solving led him to pursue a future in cybersecurity, and he will transfer to Virginia Commonwealth University this fall to continue his studies.

Looking Forward with Gratitude and Purpose

Though his mother wasn’t present at his graduation—a bittersweet reality Sebastian continues to process—he stands proud of how far he’s come.

“She was my biggest cheerleader,” he says quietly. “But I want to do well in spite of it, to honor everything I’ve gone through.”

As commencement speaker, Sebastian took the stage not just to celebrate his own success, but to inspire others. His message was one of hope, courage, and the power of community.

“Take the leap,” he advised prospective Reynolds students. “The support, the professors, the connections you can make—is all here. You just have to step into it.”

To students who are struggling, Sebastian’s message is clear: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’re not alone.”
Sebastian Portillo didn’t just graduate—he’s led, inspired, and is shining a light for those still finding their way.
