Freeman appointed to JSRCC College Board for third term

Richmond, Va.- The Henrico County Board of Supervisors recently appointed J. Douglas Freeman, Sr. to his third term on the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Board.  He served previously for eight years on the College Board before his term limit was reached in 2005. Freeman has served for the past three years on the College’s Foundation Board.

Elite institutions court best and brightest Reynolds students

Williamsburg, VA- The College of William and Mary will provide more opportunities for J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College students to attend the historic institution. Through a creative agreement signed by the two presidents, at least 15 Reynolds students will be allowed to co-enroll in classes at William and Mary each year.

Reynolds’ Opticianry Students Team up with VA Hospital Center to Make Eyeglasses for Honduras Mission

RICHMOND, VA –  First year Opticianry students attending J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College this semester will fabricate over 500 pair of eyeglasses for Honduras residents. The Virginia Hospital Center will deliver the eyeglasses during its annual medical missionary trip in November of 2007. “This is an amazing real-life opportunity for our first year students, as they will be making eyewear for real patients. Most students don’t start making patient eyewear until their second year in the opticianry degree program,” said Opticianry Program Director Kristi Ostrom.

Reynolds’ Dental Laboratory Program Receives Grant

RICHMOND, VA –  Nearly 100 nursing graduates participated in the biannual Nursing Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, January 25, 2007. The program recognizes students recently completing the Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing. The ceremony opened with a welcome by JSRCC President Gary Rhodes, followed by an inspirational keynote address from retired JSRCC Professor Jean Moseley, RN, MS.

Sargeant Reynolds Community College recently honored faculty and staff who retired over the past year at a reception on the Downtown Campus.  Among the honorees were three faculty members who earned the distinction of Professor Emeriti, the highest honor bestowed upon a faculty member of the college.  President Gary L. Rhodes presented the Professor Emeriti resolutions and medallions to M. L. Grayson Foy, School of Mathematics & Science; Frances B. Stanley, of Nursing & Allied Health; and Dr. Susan S. Wood, School of Mathematics & Science.

Students rally around community college transfer grant proposal

January 25, 2007

RICHMOND, VA – Community college students from around the Commonwealth joined Virginia21 and Senate Majority Leader Walter A. Stosch (R-Henrico) recently at the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Parham Road Campus for a rally designed to educate and garner support for the proposed Virginia Community College Transfer Grant program. Designed to address the dual challenges of accessibility and affordability currently confronting Virginia’s institutions of higher learning, the legislation was introduced to the 2007 session of the General Assembly by Stosch and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Vincent F. Callahan, Jr. (R-Fairfax). Current estimates indicate that enrollment levels at four-year and two-year institutions in Virginia will increase between 21 percent and 25 percent by Fiscal Year 2012. Senator Stosch and Delegate Callahan co-chaired a joint subcommittee that examined issues related to enrollment growth and increased costs of higher education. >> Read the full story

$100,000 Equipment Grant From Abbott Diagnostics

Sargeant Reynolds Community College Medical Laboratory Technology program has been chosen as one of only 16 programs in the country to receive an AxSYM analyzer through the Labs Are Vital ™ program sponsored by Abbott Diagnostics.  Valued in excess of $100,000, the machine measures various chemicals and the differential qualities of blood and other biological samples in the diagnosis of disease.

Sargeant Reynolds Community College will hold its third session of the 2006-2007 Around The World Through Books discussion series on Thursday, February 22.  JSRCC English professors Dr. Ghazala Hashmi and Maria Ramos will lead the discussion on Edward P. Jones’ Pulitzer Prize winner, The Known World. The program will start at 7 p.m. in the North Run Corporate Center auditorium located at 1630 East Parham Road.
