Distance Learning FAQs

Common questions among Distance Learning students.

bulletSince I am taking a Distance Learning course, will I ever have to come to a JSRCC campus?  What if I live more than an hour away?
For  almost all of the JSRCC Distance Learning courses, there is at least one required on-campus meeting at the beginning of the course.  The dates for these meetings are posted in the schedule so that students have advanced notice and can make arrangements to attend, i.e., arrange for the babysitter, request leave from work, schedule vacation.
If you live a long distance from the college, we recommend that, for your convenience, you first consider the Distance Learning options at the community colleges nearest to where you live or work.

bulletWhat if I miss the required meeting?
If you know before you register that you cannot attend the required meeting, you should select another section or delay registering until the next semester.
If you miss the required meeting because of a work or personal emergency, you must immediately contact your instructor to discuss any possible options.  The instructor may recommend that you select another section or delay taking this course until it is more convenient to attend the required class meeting.

bulletAfter the required class meeting at the beginning of the semester, will I have to make any other trips to the campus?
You will need to take all proctored tests at a campus Testing Center.  For selected courses, you may also have clinicals, labs, special seminars or presentations scheduled for on-campus.  If you live outside of the JSRCC service area, you may request to have a proctor at the community college is your area administer the tests/exams.  Contact the Center for Distance Learning at the start of the semester if you need to make this kind of testing arrangement.

bulletHow do I find out who the instructor is for my class?
There are three ways to find out instructor information:
bulletCheck the online course schedule for the instructor name.  Then check the JSRCC Contacts list for office telephone number and email address.
bulletCheck the listing of faculty in the Orientation to Distance Learning in Blackboard.
bulletCall the Center for Distance Learning at 804-523-5612 (1-800-711-1628) during regular office hours or send an email to distance-ed@jsr.vccs.edu.
