Pre-Teacher Education

If you are interested in becoming a teacher, you can begin your pathway to teaching at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. You should identify your proposed endorsement area and bachelor's degree major as early as possible so that you can select the most appropriate degree program while at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Most endorsement areas require a bachelor's degree in a liberal arts or sciences area. It is also helpful to identify the four-year institution to which you intend to transfer, so that your course selections at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College meet as many of the four-year institution's requirements as possible.

Your choice of endorsement area and future bachelor's degree major will determine which transfer Associate degree program you select at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. You should work with a teacher education advisor to select and plan your program. After completing your associate degree and passing Praxis I, you can transfer to one of the teacher licensure programs approved by the Virginia Department of Education to seek your bachelor's degree and to meet teacher licensure requirements, including Praxis II, professional studies (education) courses, and student teaching. Some teacher licensure programs also involve earning a Master's Degree.


Here are some examples of endorsement areas matched with transfer associate degree programs:

• To teach English or a foreign language, select the Teacher Preparation Specialization of the Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts.



• To teach history or special education, select the Teacher Preparation Specialization of the Associate in Science degree in Social Sciences.



• To teach mathematics or science, select the Teacher Preparation Specialization of the Associate in Science degree in Science.



• To teach business education, select the Associate in Science degree in Business Administration.



• To teach elementary school, select the Teacher Preparation Specialization of the Associate degree program that mostly closely aligns with your future bachelor's degree major.



• To teach middle school, you will need to select two areas of concentration, selected from among English, history/social science, mathematics, and science. Depending on the two areas of concentration you select and your future bachelor's degree major, you will choose a curriculum based on one of the concentrations, but also take courses to meet the other concentration area.

SDV 107 Career Education (Teaching) - 2 credits - includes a 10 clock-hour observation field experience in an area school

EDU 200 Introduction to Teaching As a Profession - 3 credits - includes a 40 clock-hour internship field experience in an area school
