Commonwealth College Course Collaborative

For years, high school students pursued advanced courses to get a head start on college - but they often didn't know what those courses actually would be worth to a particular college.

Now they have certainty. The Commonwealth College Course Collaborative (CCCC) is a common set of subjects that allow Virginia students the chance to earn a semester's worth of college credit while in high school.

"Students earning a college degree in seven semesters instead of eight can save an average of $5,000 in tuition." - Governor Mark R. WarnerThe CCCC is compromised of 13 credit hours that are accepted at all of the participating institutions for degree credit. At some colleges, students also may have the option to earn as many as 20 additional degree credit hours. In some cases, a student could earn more than 30 credits through CCCC. That means less time needed to earn a college degree - and more savings for students and their families.

Every public college and community college in Virginia (except VMI), as do 24 undergraduate private institutions that make up the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (except Liberty University) will transfer the CCCC courses to their programs when you complete each course at a satisfactory level.

By taking full advantage of CCCC's 13 credit hours, students can reduce the time it takes to earn a college degree, regardless of which institution they plan to attend, or use the extra time for additional learning opportunities.

In an historic move, two-year and four-year colleges and universities across the Commonwealth of Virginia approved 13 credit hours of dual enrollment* courses for college transfer under the Commonwealth College Course Collaborative (CCCC) initiative of September 15, 2004.

CCCC Courses Include:

:: Introduction to Psychology (PSY 201)
:: US History I (HIS 121)
:: US History II (HIS 122)
:: Introduction to Biology (BIO 101)

BIO 101, HIS 121 and 122 and PSY 201 are part of the CCCC and are guaranteed to transfer to all CCCC schools upon satisfactory completion.

The second semester of these courses, i.e., BIO 102 and PSY 202 as well as ENG 111/112, ECO 201/202 and PLS 211 are JSRCC courses that may be transferred to a number of colleges and universities as described in each of their guides for transfer students. The guides usually can be obtained from the admissions office of the college you are interested in attending.

* Dual enrollment consists of both courses taken for dual credit in which the student's credits are posted on HS and JSRCC transcripts, as well as courses taken as concurrent enrollment courses in which the student's credits are only posted on their JSRCC transcript.

Save Time and Money
By completing one semester or more of college while you are still in high school, you can potentially save quite a bit of money and time needed to complete a four year college degree. "Students earning a college degree in seven semesters instead of eight can save an average of $5000 in tuition. This initiative also will help to alleviate the space crunch expected with the influx of 61,000 additional students seeking admission to Virginia colleges and universities by the year 2010." - Governor Mark R. Warner
