Reynolds students attend NABA Convention

Through the efforts of the Pathways to College program (PTC), this summer a group of Reynolds students attended the National Association of Black Accountants ( NABA) Convention & Expo. Insight 2023: Elevate, was held in New Orleans, Louisiana, where more than 3,500 attendees enjoyed several days of speakers, education opportunities, and connecting with friends and colleagues.

The PTC is a program that helps strengthen the pipeline of students from community colleges to Historically Black Colleges and Universities ( HBCUs) or four-year institutions. Their partnership with NABA has not only brought the Elevate Convention opportunity to students but through the PTC program, Reynolds students have been awarded over $15,000 in scholarships and have over 20 active PTC participants. PTC participants also enjoyed various perks of being NABA members, including networking, meaningful career connections, and sponsorships.

Eleven students applied and were selected to attend the NABA Elevate Convention, all expenses paid. Ngan Dinh, Ihtasham Ashraf, Cheyenne Alston, Keisha Dortch, Paige Trice, Shanelle Catoe, Wilneydi Lopez Alarcon, Moneke Mack, Teunshea Morris, and Angel Shorter, attended along with Professor Sheila Betz.

There they took part in three intensive days filled with sessions informing them of various careers in accounting and finance. They also got to attend a career fair and meet with accounting firms and Fortune 500 companies. Students heard high-profile guest speakers like Stacie Abrams and Carla Harris, who shared their inspirational stories.

Three applicants, Erica Quick, Cheyenne Alston, and Teunshae Morris, were each the recipient of a $5,000 scholarship award. Through the contributions of individuals, groups, and organizations that share NABA’s desire to break through the economic barriers students of color often experience, NABA offers an average of 150 scholarships annually.

Next year’s NABA Convention will take place in Las Vegas!
