Meet Margaret Haske

Born in Chestertown, Maryland, and raised on Long Island, New York, Margaret brings a truly global perspective to her role, shaped by 25 years of international experience in Aruba, Jordan, Kenya, China, and the Netherlands. Now happily settled in Richmond—close to her mom and five siblings—Margaret is thriving in a role that allows her to support students while connecting with their unique stories. She's traded jet lag for community roots and couldn’t be happier about it.

Where were you born and where do you live now?
I was born in Chestertown, MD, where my father was a professor at Washington College. Most of my childhood was spent on Long Island in New York. For the last twenty-five years, I have been working overseas, and I have lived in Aruba, Jordan, Kenya, China, and the Netherlands. Last year, I permanently moved to Richmond, VA, where my mom and five of my siblings live. Not sure how we all ended up here, but I am glad to have family close. And, I don’t miss the jet lag!

When did you join Reynolds, and what made you want to join Reynolds Community College?
I joined Reynolds in January 2024. I love the diverse student body that we have here at Reynolds. Many students come to the writing studio to get help with college transfer essays or personal narratives. I especially enjoy those consultations because I get to hear so many interesting stories.

What is your role at Reynolds, and what do you do on a typical day?
I am the Writing Studio Program Coordinator, and each day is very different. I am involved in hiring and training writing consultants; developing and finding resources to support students; visiting classes; scheduling appointments; and reviewing data to determine how we can adapt to support our students.

Do you have any talents or hobbies? Or what do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy cooking, and I make a great classic New York cheesecake.
I love traveling. I recently got back from a near perfect trip to New York City and this summer I will be taking my niece to Barcelona. I love solo travel as it inspires me to be more adventurous and meet new people. The photo of me is from a trip I took to Alaska. Guess who caught the biggest fish that day!
