Meet April Corbin

April Corbin and her two young children and husband in a family portraitMeet April Corbin, Department Chair for General Studies, the Uniform Certificate of General Studies, and Student Development (SDV) courses at Reynolds Community College. A Richmond native with deep roots in the surrounding area, April brings her passion for accessible, student-centered education into every aspect of her work. After spending years as a high school counselor supporting students in their college transitions, she joined Reynolds in 2023—drawn by its mission to make higher education affordable and achievable for all. In addition to leading academic programs, she teaches Education and SDV courses, guiding students through their early college experiences and future career planning. Outside the classroom, April is a music lover and avid reader—especially of children’s books—as a mom to two young kids, Rory and Rhys.

Where were you born and where do you live now?
I was born in Richmond, Virginia, grew up in Louisa and Goochland, and currently live in Hanover.

When did you join Reynolds and what made you want to join Reynolds Community College?
I joined the Reynolds team in February of 2023. Previously, I was a high school counselor and I partnered with Reynolds often to find the best opportunities for my students as they were taking their next steps toward their future goals. I loved all that Reynolds had to offer my students, and generally all that community college stands for. Education should be affordable and for everyone, and that is what colleges like Reynolds provide.

What is your role at Reynolds and what do you do on a typical day?
I am the Department Chair for General Studies, Uniform Certificate of General Studies, and SDV courses and I teach Education and SDV classes. On a typical day I am teaching, preparing coursework or materials, grading, providing feedback to students, advising, and scheduling out courses for future semesters. I love working with our students at Reynolds to help them reach their goals for the future.

What do you do in your spare time?
I love to sing, listen to music, and read. With two small children, right now I mostly read children’s books, but I love those as well! In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family–my husband, Jonathan, 4-year-old daughter, Rory, 1-year-old son, Rhys, and our 6-year-old Cavalier King Charles mix, Pepper. We spend a lot of time outside when it’s nice out.
