Finding purpose through perseverance: Lauren Nicholas pursues a future in laboratory science
For Lauren Nicholas, the path to a career in healthcare has never been just about science — it has been about curiosity and the determination to keep moving forward, even when the road felt uncertain.
Lauren, a Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) student at Reynolds Community College expected to graduate in 2026, has transformed lifelong curiosity into a clear professional purpose: helping patients behind the scenes through laboratory science.
Her early interest in medicine led her to earn a biology degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, become a certified phlebotomist, and gain three years of clinical experience. Laboratory roles at Abbott and McKinney Specialty Labs confirmed her passion, ultimately guiding her toward a career as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
Soon after, she applied to Reynolds.
A learning environment built for success
Lauren chose Reynolds intentionally. After experiencing large lecture halls at a university, she was drawn to the smaller class sizes and individualized support offered by the MLT program.
“With ADHD, having more one-on-one time with professors helps me tremendously with focus and retention,” she said. “I wanted an environment where I could truly learn and grow.”
That decision proved transformative.
“My experience has been wonderful,” Lauren said. “The instructors truly care about our success. You can feel how much they want us to continue on our career paths.”
She credits the MLT faculty with creating a supportive and motivating learning environment. Instructor Kimberly Rose, in particular, has had a lasting influence.
“She makes sure students succeed not just academically but personally,” Lauren said. “I feel seen and heard in her classroom. I never feel anxious asking questions.”
Beyond academics, Lauren has built strong friendships with classmates, creating moments of joy amid demanding coursework. One favorite memory involves studying together for a blood bank exam and turning a complicated mnemonic into a song.
“There was so much laughter,” she said. “I definitely don’t sing like Beyoncé, but it made learning unforgettable.”
Overcoming challenges with resilience
Lauren’s educational journey has not been without obstacles. Growing up, she watched her mother work multiple jobs to provide stability, shaping her understanding of perseverance at an early age. Later, the loss of her grandparents deeply affected her mental health, and she faced academic challenges after being diagnosed with ADHD.
“I struggled to focus and sit still,” she said. “But I learned how to manage my ADHD, heal from loss, and keep going despite financial challenges.”
Balancing full-time work with rigorous coursework has been one of her greatest tests. Through intentional scheduling and improved time management, she found ways to stay on track while maintaining her responsibilities outside the classroom.
Support that changed everything
Financial pressure nearly forced Lauren to leave the program altogether. At one point, she faced an impossible choice between paying rent and continuing her education.
That changed when the Reynolds Educational Foundation offered a tuition assistance grant supporting Reynolds’ MLT students. Those grant monies are funded by the Commonwealth Transfusion Foundation.
“When I learned the foundation had covered my tuition balance, I immediately called my mom,” Lauren said. “I was overwhelmed with relief and gratitude.”
The support not only eased financial stress but renewed her confidence and sense of belonging.
“This grant reassured me that there are people who believe in students like me and want to see us succeed,” she said. “It allowed me to focus fully on my coursework and clinical preparation.”
Preparing for a meaningful future
Through rigorous coursework and hands-on laboratory training, Lauren has developed technical skills alongside discipline, critical thinking, and attention to detail — qualities essential for a career in medical laboratory science.
As she looks toward graduation, Lauren is motivated by the impact she hopes to make in healthcare, contributing to accurate diagnoses and patient care through precise laboratory analysis.
Words of encouragement for future students
Lauren encourages prospective students to consider Reynolds with an open mind.
"Don't make assumptions about community colleges. You'll learn the same material as you would at a university but for half the cost and with people who genuinely want to help you succeed."
For students facing challenges, her message is deeply personal.
“Never let your struggles determine your future,” she said. “Your grades, income, or setbacks do not define you. What defines you is your ability to get back up.”
For Lauren, that mindset has made all the difference — turning obstacles into momentum and uncertainty into purpose.
And as she continues her journey toward becoming a Medical Laboratory Technician, one thing is clear: her future in healthcare is not only possible, but powerful.
