The Writing Studios

Faculty Resources

The Writing Studio is excited to work with faculty to develop student writers and help with creating writing assignments. The Writing Studio presents agile opportunities to meet students where they are and help them to realize their full potential as academic writers. Building confident writers is our main goal and we’ve chosen to design our studio using the tenets of Ecocomposition while offering open studio hours for students to visit for low key support from one of our consultants.

To learn more about our theoretical foundations, service goals, and types of services that we offer explore the Studio webpage navigation menu.

Sample Syllabus Statement

To encourage your students to take advantage of all the resources the Writing center has to offer, we encourage you to include this text, or similar language, on your syllabi:

I encourage you to visit the  Writing Studio for essays and all other writing assignments. The Writing Studio offers one-to-one writing consultations for students enrolled in any course, and no appointment is necessary. Consultants can help you at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing. You can also drop in the Writing Studio to work in a quiet, focused, and supportive space. You can receive help at our Downtown Studio, our Parham Studio, or our Virtual Studio!

Please check out our FAQs page for more information.

Canvas Site for the Writing Studio

We have developed a Canvas site as a central location for information about our Studio.  Our site includes a ready-made informational module that you can import into your own Canvas class sites as well as our calendar for workshops.   We will utilize the Canvas site as one way of communicating directly to faculty about developments and new opportunities for collaboration.

If you would like to be added to the Canvas site, please contact the Interim Writing Studio Coordinator, Barbara Lytton,

Consultations at the Writing Studio

Consultations with students generally last 15 to 20 minutes each, and students can have multiple consultations during one visit to the studio. We've designed our Writing Studios to be places where students can feel comfortable working on their writing tasks, while knowing that we’re here for feedback, to answer questions, and to just talk through their assignment if you need it. We've adopted an Ecocomposition studio approach which emphasizes that the student, the writer, has the authority on their ideas, and our consultants are there to help them share those ideas.

Writing Studio Workshops

The Writing Studio holds short workshops on grammar, mechanics, citation, argumentation, and other writing skills. You can read about our workshops and recommend them to your students by visiting our Writing Workshops page

Referrals to the Writing Studio

We will help any student with any type of writing assignment for your classes. One of our major aims is to facilitate the development of confident, internally motivated, self-actualized writers/thinkers/students.  We believe direct communication between faculty and students is key to accomplishing this goal. Because of this, our hope is that you, the professor, will communicate the need for the student to seek support and the value of a visit to the Writing Studio. Then the student can access our website to determine what kind of support they want to seek.
